Delhi Elections : Delimitation of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies

Next elections will be held in constituencies redrawn by the delimitation exercise under a decision taken by the Union Cabinet on Thursday.

In a move to formally approve the recasting of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies at the earliest, the government is set to promulgate an ordinance empowering itself to notify the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission in batches.

The ordinance will empower the government to notify the Delimitation Commission result for the states, excluding five northeastern ones and Jharkhand, well-placed sources in the law ministry.

The sources explained that the original law, as per which the Delimitation Commission was constituted and assigned the task of redrawing constituencies on the basis of the 2001 census, provides that the results of the commission work will be notified in one go all over the country.

The Cabinet adopted an ordinance to defer the delimitation exercise in Jharkhand and four north eastern states– Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said the government has accepted the demilitation exercise.

Besides, “the Election Commission has also advised that the work on recasting the constituencies should wait and commence only in March, by which time the Election Commission would have notified the mid-term Karnataka assembly elections,” said the minister.
