Delhi Elections : BJP bags five seats in Delhi Cantonment Board elections

The BJP trounced the Congress in the Delhi Cantonment Board election which was held on Sunday. The BJP won five out of the eight wards, while the Congress managed two wards and one ward went to a BJP rebel who was contesting as an independent candidate. Both the BJP and the Congress had made this election a trailer for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

From the BJP, Pradeep Kadyan (Uri Enclave), Sanjeev Nayar (Gopinath Bazar), Lalchand Mehraolia (Jhareda), Meena Sharma (Ram Nagar) and Anupama Tripathi (Sadar Bazar, Old Nangal) won the seats. Those who won from the Congress ticket were Arun Singh (Naraina) and Sandeep Tanwar (Kabul Line). Independent candidate Omwati Lohia won from Subroto Park ward.

Delhi Congress chief J.P. Agarwal refused to accept the defeat and said that he would be lodging a complaint with the Election Commission for “mismanagement” during the elections. “More than 5,000 votes out of the total 25,000 votes cast were rejected by the returning officer. Also, ballot papers were used when the electronic voting machines were available.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit was visibly upset with the result and refused to speak to the media on the issue. On the other hand, Mr Agarwal explained the defeat due to price rise and the Sixth Pay Commission recommendation which has not been liked by the army personnel.
