Delhi Elections : BJP filed a complaint with EC

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a complaint with the Election Commissioner of India, alleging that Delhi’s electoral roll has more than 11 lakh fake voters. The party also claims that the number of voters in the Capital has increased by over 7 lakh in just the past one year.

The delegation, led by state president Om Prakash Kohli, urged the EC to set up a joint verification mechanism to identify and remove fake voters, who they claimed are in “very large numbers”.

The party claimed that an inquiry conducted by it has revealed that as many as 11,24,781 voters are registered twice in the voters list.

It also claimed that there are over 15 lakh voters who are registered twice but with a “very minor” difference and seem to “duplicate”.

“We have demanded the EC to set up a joint verification mechanism with both election officers and members from political parties to identify such votes and remove them from the lists,” Kohli told reporters.

The BJP also presented a CD containing the list of duplicate names to election commissioner Chawla.

Emphasising that as many as 7 lakh voters were added to the list in one year running up to last November’s Assembly elections, Kohli said the difference in the share of votes between the Congress and the BJP was just 3 per cent. “What is the credibility of an election fought on the basis of an electoral roll that has gross irregularities?” Kohli asked.
