Delhi Elections : Chetan Chauhan kicked off his election campaign
Chetan Chauhan figured that his cricket connection was the best way to establish a rapport with young voters in east Delhi. So, the BJP candidate and former opener of the Indian cricket team kicked off his election campaign from Gandhi Nagar by playing few shots.
It was a study in contrast. After the drama of Sandeep Dikshit’s arrival at the district commissioner’s office
in a fancy four-wheeler, BJP candidate Chetan Chauhan decided to turn up in a rickshaw.
Chauhan’s deliberate home-spun style was reinforced earlier in the day when he decided to start his nomination process with a puja at the Bhagwat Dham in Mayur Vihar.
Like his Congress rival though, Chauhan, despite his attempts to connect with the middle class electorate, may face some disconnect, as his assets amount to approximately a little over Rs 2 crore. It’s an increase over the 2004 elections, when he declared assets worth over Rs 50 lakh when fighting for re-election from Amroha, UP.
According to the declaration of assets of made by him while filing the nomination papers from East Delhi seat, he owns agricultural land of 18 bigha in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh worth Rs 18 lakh and a non-agricultural plot costing Rs 10 lakh.
Chauhan who has entered the fray for the first time from the East Delhi seat also has residential property in Gurgaon worth Rs 20 lakh in his name, according to the affidavit.
A residential house in East Delhi worth Rs 70 lakh and another in Gurgaon in Haryana costing Rs 20 lakh is in the name of his wife Sangita.
He is the owner of two Scorpios, a Honda City and Maruti Zen, the affidavit said.
Chauhan declared that he and his wife have invested nearly Rs 60 lakh in various financial instruments like NSS, LIC, postal savings and policies.
While he possesses jewellery worth Rs three lakh, his wife owns gold and silver ornaments to the tune of Rs 1.20 lakh Chauhan has taken loan of Rs 23.80 lakh as per the affidavit.
