DUSU Elections Agenda
The dates for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections were announced. And student leaders were ready with their list of priorities. Naturally, unlike previous years, CWG is on top of everyone’s agenda.
Organisations feel that students have been suffering a lot of problems due to the preparation for the Games and the issues must be addressed immediately.
Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) feels that though the Games will get over by October, the after-effects will be visible on campus for a long time. Ashutosh Srivastava, Delhi state secretary of ABVP, said, “Commonwealth Games is the biggest issue which we plan to take up. Hundreds of students have been affected due to the construction work going on at the campus for over a year now.
Among other issues, ABVP is planning to take up the semester system and infrastructural problems inside colleges more seriously during the polls. “Right from the inception, semester system in undergraduate courses has been in the news. Teachers and the V-C have been fighting over its implementation. The matter got so ugly that the case went to High Court. However, in the entire process, students of DU were never consulted.
Another issue is the infrastructure problems in some of the colleges located outside the campus. They don’t have proper computer labs or classrooms.
Student organisations such as National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) and ABVP are on their toes this year as candidature of most of the aspirants got cancelled last year for flouting Lyngdoh Committee regulations, which state that only handmade posters and bills can be used for campaigning. In 2009, nominations of seven candidates for the DUSU Elections were cancelled.
