ABVP’s Deepak Bansal will be the new Joint Secretary of the DUSU as he trounced his NSUI rival Asish Choudhary by 2,105 votes.

As many as 41 candidates fought for the four top posts of the student’s body, but the main contest was between the NSUI and ABVP, the two major participants.

Election season at the Delhi University (DU), short and muted as it is after the implementation of the Lyngdoh committee recommendations, officially began on Thursday.

The University Elections office released the final list of candidates and all major political factions started campaigning for their panel of candidates who will contest to the post of president, vice-president, secretary and joint-secretary of Delhi University Student Union (DUSU).

After withdrawals and disqualifications, only 14 out of the 77 students who had filed nominations to the president’s post remained in the final candidate list. Nine students out of the 60 who had filed nominations for the vice-president’s post are on the final list. Ten students will contest to the post of Secretary and eight to the post of joint-secretary.

Neha Singh, an MA Buddhist Studies student is the presidential candidate for ABVP, which won last year’s DUSU elections. The organisation is fighting this election raising the twin issues of corruption and the need for more colleges in DU, starting with the setting up of evening colleges in existing North Campus colleges.

National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the other main player, has issued a charter demanding everything from the setting up of a ‘Center for Entrepreneurship Development’ at the University to the inclusion of DUSU office bearers in the University’s Committee against sexual harassment. Ajay Chikkara, a final-year student at the Law faculty is NSUI’s presidential candidate.

Students Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Student Federation are fighting the elections together with Soumya Guliyan, a student of BA Sociology at Miranda House College as their presidential candidate. Amit Srivastava, an MA Political Science student is All India Student Association’s (AISA) presidential candidate.

Warming up for the battle, the two major political heavyweights — ABVP and NSUI — student wings of the BJP and Congress respectively — welcomed freshers to colleges.

Beginning the exercise to organise the election, the Vice Chancellor too has appointed Prof Usha Rao of the Botany department as the Chief Election Officer for the conduct of the DUSU elections for the year.

The Vice Chancellor has also appointed the Principals of the colleges and Heads of Institutions affiliated to the University Students Union as election officers for the conduct of elections of the office bearers and members of the central council of DUSU, the University said in a statement.

The elections last year saw Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad dislodge the National Students Union of India’s eight-year hold on DU’s student body.

While ABVP, which now controls the students panel, will look to hold on to its position, the Congress-affiliated NSUI will look to strike back after a poor show last year.

The ABVP, which wrested control of the DUSU after a gap of 8 long years, made crucial changes in its candidate-selection process and voter-contact procedures, in keeping with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. The fact that the role of money power had diminished significantly too helped its case.

In an obvious reference to Rahul Gandhi, BJP said the NSUI’s defeat in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls indicates the country’s youth does not accept leaders who “visit Dalit villages wearing Reebok shoes”.

The usual fervour associated with Delhi University (DU) was missing in both north and south campuses as the students of 51 colleges voted to elect their representatives on Friday. A total of 11 candidates are contesting for the post of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president in the election, while 30 other candidates are vying for the three posts of vice president, secretary and joint secretary.

The over all voter turn out this year was 35 per cent as compared to 42 per cent last year.

A low turnout was seen at colleges where traditionally the turnout used to be healthy. On the North Campus, Kirori Mal College recorded around 35% turnout as 1210 votes were polled out of 3,500. In the colleges not on the campus like Satyawati, only 42% votes were polled when 786 of the total of 1,810 students turned up for the polls. Meanwhile, Hansraj and Rajdhani recorded 25% and 26% voter turnout respectively. But Shri Ram College of Commerce ( SRCC) managed a better turnout with 50% votes polled.

Though the entire election process remained peaceful, DU authorities did receive complaints of use of printed material on the day of polling. All kind of printed material, included pamphlets, posters and stickers have been banned for campaigning. Also, some Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at Shri Ram College of Commerce, Shyam Lal College and Vivekanand College were reported to have malfunctioned. “All these machines were replaced within 10 to 15 minutes,” According to chief electoral officer and DU proctor, Gurmeet Singh.

Delhi University students on Friday cast their votes to elect a new union in a poll which will decide the fate of 41 candidates. Tight security arrangements have been put in place and Electronic Voting Machines were used for the polling. “As many as 943 EVMs have been pressed into service. There are 111 centres for the college elections and 130 for DUSU,” said Chief Electoral Officer Gurmeet Singh.

A total of 11 candidates are contesting for the post of DUSU president in the election, while 30 other candidates are vying for the three posts of Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary.

In coordination with Delhi Police, security arrangements have also been made, and a police picket will be in place outside every college where centers are located.

Interestingly, the electioneering was quitest and cleanest for this year’s DUSU poll.

The presidential candidates for this year’s DUSU elections are: candidates include Jitender Choudhary of ABVP, Harish Choudhary of NSUI, Shweta Raj of AISA, Aparajiths Raja of AISF, Sachin Kumar Dalal of INSO and Sunand of SFI, among others.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has fielded two girl students in the election while National Students Union of India (NSUI) restricted itself to one.

ABVP and NSUI have not fielded any woman candidates for the President while All India Students Association and AISF have put up woman candidates.

The DUSU elections are bastion of ABVP and NSUI till 2009 but left back students union AISF is confident of winning the DUSU election 2010. Last year AISF lost the presidential election by just 11 votes.

Over 95,895 students are expected to cast their ballots in the election.

Last year the candidature of NSUI and ABVP members were cancelled. The candidates disqualified were Deepak Negi and Umesh Tomar of NSUI and Rohit Chahal, Lalit Kumar and Ashok Khare of ABVP. Negi and Chahal were candidates for president’s post. While Tomar was aiming for vice-presidentship, Kumar was a candidate for the post of secretary and Khare for joint secretary.
As per the allegations, their candidature was cancelled after the five were found spending more money than the stipulated Rs 5,000 each.

This year, the candidates are extra cautious to make sure last year’’s blunders are not repeated.
