The Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution, Government of India celebrated the World Consumer Rights Day 2019 with the theme “Trusted Smart Products” on 15th March 2019 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.The Programmewas presided over by Mr Justice RK Agrawal, President, and NCDRC.
The Theme speaker on the occasion was Shumesh Kumar Nandwani, Director General, Standardisation, Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate, Department of Electronics and Information Technology. He spoke on the role of smart products in our day to day life, their utility and highlighted the need for effective regulations in the area of data privacy and cyber security for effective consumer protection.
Secretary, Consumer Affairs Shri Avinash K. Srivastava spoke about consumer grievance handling system. He urged the State Governments to establish State level Consumer Welfare Funds. Justice RK Agrawal, President, NCDRC mentioned about the need for a comprehensive approach to address all the key elements of the digital world, including data security, privacy, safety and grievance redressal including strengthening of the regulatory and supervisory framework.
